Peter David Buis, 81, of Wilmington, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

Born September 24, 1935 in New Hanover County, he is a son of Peter Buis and Estelle Carver Buis. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Carol Keith Buis. Mr. Buis was raised in New Hanover County and graduated from New Hanover High School in 1954. He received his bachelors degree in 1961 from his beloved UNC Chapel Hill. He spent 44 years in the petroleum and oil industry.

Mr. Buis was a lifelong Tar Heels fan. He enjoyed sports and spent several summers on Wrightsville Beach as a lifeguard. He was also an avid golfer and gardener. Above all, he enjoyed the time he had with his family.

He is survived by his children, Laura Mentor (Ken), Steve Buis (Sue Ann) and Leslie Smiley (Jack); his grandchildren, Andrew Mentor (Eileen), Jana Mentor, Megg Buis, Sam Buis and Lilly Smiley; his great-grandchildren, Nicolas Buis, Aaliyah Buis and Rowan Mentor; his siblings, Richard Buis (Jackie), Charles Buis (Sheron) and Emily Fountain (Buddy); and his brothers-in-law, Douglas Keith and Brooks Keith (Ann); and several nieces and nephews.
